Scientists Invent Headset That Can Change a Cookie's Flavor
29.08.2010 22:40 0 views 0 comments
Tajuki Narumi and a team of researchers from the University of Tokyo in Japan displayed technology at the Siggraph 2010 that can change the flavor of a cookie. The technology involves odd-looking headgear that enables the wearer to view augmented reality. The headgear also has an air pump chamber that blasts the wearer with different scents. When the plain cookie is stamped with a flavor, such as almond, the device shows the wearer an almond cookie and blasts them with almond cookie scent. Take a look:

Interactive Clothing Rack Matches Clothes to Outfits
29.08.2010 22:00 0 views 0 comments
A Japanese team of designers called TeamLab have come up with an interactive fashion installation that coordinates your outfit based on the item of clothing you pick up from the rack. Sensors embedded into the hanger let the installation know which item of clothing you have picked up. Nearby screens then display which outfit will best work with the item of clothing you are holding. This technology is something that retailers could implement in stores.

German Pop Star Nadja Benaissa Convicted of Failing to Tell Partners She Was HIV Positive
29.08.2010 21:50 0 views 0 comments
German pop star Nadja Benaissa, 28, was found guilty Thursday in a German court of causing grievous bodily harm and attempted bodily harm. Nadja failed to tell three different men that she was HIV positive. One of the men now is HIV positive. Nadja is a former member of the all girl band No Angels, a top band in Germany. Because she showed great remorse and because of her age (she was 17-19) when the crimes were committed, she was given a two-year suspended sentence.
She must also complete 300 hours of community service with people who are HIV-positive.
Nadja that she began drinking alcohol and smoking pot at the age of 12. She got addicted to crack cocaine at 14. She was living on the street. A pregnancy screening at 16 showed she was pregnant and HIV positive. After that she hit it big on the German equivalent of American Idol and suddenly she was in the country's top pop group.
She testified that she kept her condition a secret to protect her child and her bandmates. She also said her doctor told her it was nearly impossible for her to infect anyone else. That, of course, is not true. Here is CNN's report:
Americans will be wondering why the men who had sex with Nadja weren't arrested for statutory rape, because she was below the age of consent. The age of consent in Germany is a shockingly low fourteen years of age.

Video: Dr. Sanjay Gupta Tours Flood-Ravaged Pakistan
29.08.2010 21:00 0 views 0 comments
One fifth of Pakistan is currently under water from the massive flooding. Millions of people are homeless. Although they are surrounded by water, it is undrinkable. CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta is on the ground with the refugees who have been told to leave because their town will be totally under water in 24 hours. Sanjay says aid is very slow in coming.
For one thing, it's very difficult to reach the flooded areas. Reports that the Taliban have been attacking aid workers have slowed down foreign aid help, although it's not clear whether those reports are accurate or not. Sanjay says that it's a slow-moving disaster, which makes it harder for people to grasp: it's not like there was one earthquake or volcano. This is a rolling disaster: next, there will be massive outbreaks of disease because of the lack of housing and clean water. Take a look:

Black and Decker to Launch PlantSmart Sensor in September
29.08.2010 4:44 0 views 0 comments
Black & Decker will launch its PlantSmart digital plant care sensor in September 2010. The sensor - which is pushed into the soil to collect data - provides detailed advice based on the grower's region for growing and maintaining plants, flowers, vegetables, fruits, trees, shrubs and grasses. The sensor measures key environmental information from sunlight and temperature to moisture, soil conditions and more. Readings are then uploaded from the sensor to a personal PlantSmart online account and combined with real-time climate and horticultural information from the local area.
Black & Decker's PlantSmart will be available online beginning September 2010 at Amazon.com and Target.com. Additionally, PlantSmart will be available in select regional retail stores in California, Texas and Florida, as well as Phoenix, Tucson, Albuquerque, Atlanta and Charlotte. It will be available in retail stores nationally beginning in Spring 2011 for $49.99.
If the PlantSmart reminds you of the EasyBloom plant sensor we blogged about in 2008 that's because Black & Decker cut a deal with PlantSense, Inc. to license the EasyBloom technology.
